The Hype Over Dropshipping

Updated: Jun 21, 2019

What is this dropshipping idea that every internet entrepreneur seems so excited about?

Supposedly you can own your own internet-based business without ever having to go to the office, deal with customers face-to-face, or house any sort of inventory. So technically you could be lying in a hammock on the beach in Fiji and still successfully run your business. Well, that sounds pretty nice, no wonder there's been so much hype about it!

The idea of dropshipping is to sell products to customers via your online store and then have the wholesaler directly ship the products to your customers. You are simply the middle man between the customer and the distributor, and you still receive the profit from what you're selling. A typical example of a dropshipping transaction would go like this:

1. A customer finds your website, adds one of your products to their cart, and completes their purchase.

2. You use the money they have put into your bank account to purchase the exact product that was on your site from a distributor, but put the customer's information as the shipping address.

3. The distributor then ships that product directly to your customer without you ever physically seeing it.

Sounds pretty simple right? Well it certainly can be, but it is important to keep in mind that you are not going to be the only one out there trying to do the same exact thing. Which is not necessarily a bad thing because it means there is a market for it. But it does mean that customers may never land on your store's particular page. Advertising your website and brand is vital for its success.

Building a successful dropshipping business can be a lucrative. However, it does take hard work, especially in the beginning stages. You first have to find and secure various reliable distributors and then develop an attractive online presence. If you discover a sellable niche and follow the right steps to building and marketing your online store, it could be you in that hammock!
