Diving in Key Largo 🌴

Key Largo, FL is known as the dive capital of the world because of its insanely crystal clear waters, it’s numerous underwater wonders, and it’s natural marine life sanctuaries. Although I’ve been diving for about 6 years now, I’ve just recently had the opportunity to dive in Key Largo for the first time, about 7 months ago. It was one of the most memorable trips of my life and I’ve already booked the same trip again for next month 🙂

We stayed at the cutest, all-inclusive dive resort called Amoray Dive Resort. One of the best parts about our stay is that we never really had to leave. The boats, tanks, gear, everything for diving was supplied at the resort. And there were plenty of shops, restaurants, and local bars within walking distance.

The resort offers two dive trips a day, a morning two-tank dive, and the same in the afternoon to a different location. The weather and skill level of the divers aboard will usually determine what dive sites the captain takes you to. One of my favorite dive sites we went to, although it was quite shallow, was the Christ of the Abyss statue.

On the boat ride out to this site, we were told that this statue was a gift from Italian scuba diver Egidi Cressi. This statue is the third bronze casting of Guido Galletti’s “Il Cristo Degli Abissi,” which translates to Christ of the Abyss, or Christ of the Deep.

We were also able to visit four or five other wrecks and reefs that were so amazing! I know that in this one short weekend, we didn’t even scratch the surface of all the beautiful underwater sites Key Largo has to experience, not to mention the rest of the Florida Keys!

Sarasota, where I live currently, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But unfortunately, the diving is so-so. This is because the visibility is maybe about 20 feet, while in the Keys it’s about 60 feet. These numbers obviously vary, but I’m talking on average. So it’s always exciting to dive at new locations and see the difference of water clarity and marine life. I’ve heard that the visibility gets clearer the deeper you go. I’m currently only certified to dive down to 60 feet max, but I’m taking my advance course this spring and will be able to dive down to 100 feet!

If anyone is looking for a good, all inclusive dive trip, I would definitely recommend diving with the Amoray Dive Resort in Key Largo. Especially if it’s your first time diving in the keys because it is so convenient and they are very education about the area and where to take you. I have yet to explore the rest of the keys, as far as with SCUBA diving, but I am sure there are many other wonderful charter companies and dive sites to explore 🙂
