The Gulf of Mexico is loaded with one of the world’s most highest volumes of plastic and garbage. It’s so much easier to just grab disposal items to bring to the beach or on the boat (trust me, I know). But so often these disposable products such as water bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, and other non biodegradable items end up flying into the water, perhaps without us even realizing it. It’s always a good habit to pick up any garbage or plastic that you happen to see in the water or at the beach, but I’ve just discovered another way that I can get involved with keeping the gulf clean.
Project AWARE is a worldwide program that partners with local SCUBA divers to set up organized dives throughout the year to clean plastic and trash out of the ocean. There are quite a few dives scheduled this year in the Tampa Bay area.

I’m so excited to get more involved with keeping our local beaches and waters clean, and all while doing one of my favorite hobbies!
